DESERVING AN ACCOLADE
Storage space at every turn
Storage.
Is there ever enough?
A wander through the Accolade show home by Hopewell Residential in the southeast lake community of Mahogany amply addresses that concern. Pantries, closets and shelves are on hand at each turn in this 1,746-square-foot home, ready to stow coats, clutter, groceries and gear.
The two-storey laned home builds a second floor on the basic layout of the Opus bungalow plan. The extra 745 square feet adds two secondary bedrooms, a generous entertainment room, a full bathroom and upper laundry room into the plan. The central entertainment space gets a design boost from a tray ceiling, along with natural light from a large window. Two sets of doors open onto a wall-sized linen closet along the hallway side of this room.
The main floor sets the owners’ bedroom at the back of the home, lending it a peaceful master retreat feel by separating it from the rest of the action. It’s down a short passage, with a pocket side deck between the bedroom and the kitchen. The master bedroom is spacious, at 10 feet, three inches by 14 feet, 10 inches, and provides dual walk-in closets and a master ensuite with a full-size shower and dual vanities.
The open concept main floor presents a kitchen with a large central island. The dual sink is set against the windows for natural light coming from the side deck. This is a kitchen with plenty of counter space, along with generous pantry real estate set in two tall banks of shelves.
The dining area sits between the kitchen and great room, pleasant spacing for everyday family meals, as well as for entertaining.
The great room, which can host a couch along with a pair of lounge chairs, is warmed with a fireplace to one side.
Lending to the open, fresh feel of the home, the Accolade show home is staged with a “green” wall (added after photos of the home were taken) — it shows what the place could look like with a living wall of plants (though for show home purposes, this one is not alive).
Along with generous light from the large front window, supporting high, square side windows in the dining area and the kitchen window, the central living space is bright with natural light.
A final detail of this home shows an appreciation of the varied weather Calgary experiences.
It has foyers — with handy closet space, of course — at both the front door and the side door to prevent wafts of cold winter air from immediately invading the greater living space.
