Police probe fatal shooting in Penbrooke Meadows

- YOLANDE COLE ycole@postmedia.com

The fatal shooting of a man in the southeast neighbourhood of Penbrooke Meadows early Wednesday kept students at a nearby elementary school indoors for much of the day.

Calgary police said officers were called around 6:30 a.m. to the 200 block of Pensville Close S.E. for reports someone in a home had been shot.

When emergency responders arrived, a man was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Officers cordoned off an area in front and behind a row of townhouses Wednesday morning as homicide detectives spoke with residents.

The police service said there is no risk to public safety associated with the shooting.

Neighbour Abdullah Hussain said he heard banging on a door and saw a car leaving the alley around 3:30 a.m.

Other neighbours said they have noticed a lot of parties at the residence.

Kelly O’Donnell, whose daughter goes to kindergarten at James Short Memorial School, said it was scary to see the incident being investigated across a field from two schools.

She said students at her daughter’s school were being taken straight into the building Wednesday morning.

“Not only is this a really scary situation, but you’ve got kids, and they’re full of questions and they want answers,” she said.

Anyone with information about the incident is being asked to contact police or Crime Stoppers.

An autopsy on the male victim is scheduled for Thursday.

If the incident is determined to be a homicide, it would be the 14th in the city this year.
