A number of Remembrance Day ceremonies will be held across Calgary on Sunday to mark the 100th anniversary of the 1918 armistice, which ended the First World War.

From 21-gun salutes, sombre speeches and charity drives collecting donations for veterans in need, Postmedia offers a selection of Remembrance Day ceremonies for Calgarians to honour the fallen and those who continue to serve.

THE MILITARY MUSEUMS SERVICE

The Military Museums will host a ceremony before the museums’ opening for curious Calgarians to learn more about Canada’s part in numerous military conflicts.

Food bank donation boxes will be set up for Calgarians to bring non-perishable food items to donate to veterans’ support groups.

The service starts at 10:30 a.m. with the arrival of guests of honour, followed by a wreath-laying ceremony at 11:30.

Where: The Military Museums, 4520 Crowchild Tr. S.W.

FIELD OF CROSSES MEMORIAL

Now in its 10th year, The Field of Crosses memorial — supported by the Canadian Legacy Project and made possible by the McCann Family Foundation — will feature a 21-gun salute from three 105-millimetre howitzer artillery guns as part of the 41 Canadian Brigade Group’s Remembrance Day Parade.

The guns will fire at 11 a.m., and attendees are asked to stay at least 100 metres from the guns.

Where: Field of Crosses Memorial, between 3rd Street N.W. and Centre Street.

HIGHLANDERS PARADE

One of Calgary’s reserve regiments will march on Central Memorial

Park on Remembrance Day as part of an annual ceremony near the Cenotaph memorial.

Starting at 10 a.m., members of the Highlanders will parade along 4th Street S.W between 12th and 13th avenues and a ceremony will follow the parade.

Where: Central Memorial Park, 1221 2nd St. S.W.

JUBILEE AUDITORIUM CEREMONY

An annual wreath-laying ceremony will feature politicians, veterans and military and community organizations honouring Canada’s veterans. Calgarians are encouraged to lay a private wreath at the ceremony.

Tickets are free, but they are also limited. Contact 403-991-3219 for more information.
