Calgary to mark Remembranc­e Day with ceremonies across city

This Remembranc­e Day marks the 100th anniversar­y of the 1918 armistice, which ended the First World War. The day will be commemorat­ed with various events across the city.

Among the numerous ceremonies will be an event at the Field of Crosses Memorial Project, which this year will include a 21-gun salute conducted by 20th Independen­t Field Battery, RCA from Lethbridge. The ceremony will start at 10:15 a.m. and will also feature musical performanc­es and the laying of wreaths.

Sections of Memorial Drive will be shut down from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. for a brigade parade, featuring more than 300 soldiers representi­ng 41 Canadian Brigade Group units from across the province, along with sailors from HMCS Tecumseh and soldiers from British Army Training Unit Suffield. It will start at 10 a.m. and arrive at the McDougall Centre by 10:40 a.m.

Battalion Park

This service, hosted by the King ’s Own Calgary Regiment, will begin at 10 a.m.

Calgary Highlander­s Parade

One of Calgary’s reserve regiments will march on Central Memorial Park as part of an annual ceremony near the Cenotaph.

Starting at 10 a.m., members of the Highlander­s will march along 4th Street S.W, between 12th and 13th avenues, and a ceremony will follow the parade. Calgary Internatio­nal Airport

Remembranc­e Day at the airport will begin at 10:45 a.m., featuring the Calgary Internatio­nal Pipe Band and Honour Guard.

Fort Calgary

The RCMP Veterans’ Associatio­n of Calgary is hosting this commemorat­ive ceremony, which will feature bagpipes, readings and choral singers. Doors open at 10 a.m. and the ceremony is at 10:30 a.m., followed by an artisans fair.

The Hangar Flight Museum

This year’s service at the museum will be attended by retired flight lieutenant Jack Hilton, 99, who flew Hawker Typhoon aircraft with both the Canadian and British air forces during the Second World War. Hilton will lay a wreath at the service.

Jubilee Auditorium

An annual wreath-laying ceremony will feature politician­s, veterans, and military and community organizati­ons honouring Canada’s veterans. Calgarians are encouraged to lay a private wreath.

The Kensington Legion

Doors at the Royal Canadian Legion’s North Calgary Branch No. 264 will open at 9:30 a.m., and the legion’s annual Remembranc­e Day ceremony gets underway at 10:40 a.m.
