Police name suspect in fatal stabbing

- BILL KAUFMANN

City police have named a suspect who’s wanted under a countrywide warrant for a homicide that occurred in a Calgary nightclub on the weekend.

They’re seeking public help in arresting Cordelius Terry Jackson Harrison, 29, after a man was fatally injured during an altercation at the Paranoia nightclub early Sunday morning.

Just before 3 a.m., officers were called to 118 - 5th Ave. S.E. where more than 20 people were involved in a brawl.

A man in his 30s, identified by family and friends as Rufus Eldin, was taken to hospital where he died.

A witness at the scene said a vicious brawl broke out, with bottles flying during the nightclub’s oneyear anniversary party. Jahfaru Zabsonre, a DJ at the party, said Eldin was stabbed, sending people scurrying for safety.

Calgarian Neveen Dominic, who’s known Eldin for years, said he was a loving, thoughtful and trustworthy person who’d come to Canada after fleeing the war in South Sudan.

But she said issues of violent conflict are rife in this community and Eldin’s death is the latest tragic reminder of that.

“There’s so much division in the community, it’s like the war going on in South Sudan,” said Dominic.

Eldin, who had studied banking and financial services, had lived in Hamilton, Ont., but has called Calgary home for nearly a decade and had worked in the oil and gas industry, she said.

Close friend Kribi Nosha Michael said, “Rufus was always taking care of people, even people he didn’t know.”

A GoFundMe page has been set up by friends to help Eldin’s family.

Dominic on Monday appealed to Calgarians, Albertans and the Sudanese community to be more attentive to its young males in areas of employment, leadership and counselling.

Jackson, who’s wanted on a second-degree murder warrant for the killing, is described as 5-ft., 9-in. tall, 190 pounds with black, braided shoulder-length hair.
