Less than a week before they’re allowed to reopen as the COVID-19 lockdown is eased, health officials shut down two Calgary beauty and tattoo parlours.

Alberta Health Services say the two businesses were operating in violation of the province’s health regulations meant to control the spread of the novel coronavirus and ordered them to close immediately.

The reopening of such businesses in Stage 2 of the province’s economic relaunch, with safety restrictions, was moved up one week to Friday by the provincial government.

On its website, AHS officials say Permanent Beauty by Lili, at 110, 535 8th Ave. S.E., was in breach of orders from the province’s chief medical officer of health that posed a public danger in a closure order dated June 6.

“The operator was tattooing a client’s eyebrows. This activity could contribute to the spread of COVID-19,” it stated.

Then, on June 9, the AHS ordered Roops Nails, at 150 Skyview Ranch St. N.E., to shut its doors after seeing customers while the lockdown order was still in effect.

It also cited hygiene violations at the nail salon involving the improper use of sinks.

Nine hair or skin care businesses in the Calgary zone have received enforcement orders under COVID-19 restrictions since March.

Seven gyms and medical clinics, and several restaurants have also been temporarily closed in the Calgary zone for similar reasons.

Small businesses have been hammered by an economic lockdown that began in March, some saying their inability to pay rent and other bills has put their survival in doubt.

But earlier this week, Premier Jason Kenney said successful efforts in holding down the COVID-19 infection and hospitalization rates means the province’s economy can open sooner than initially thought.

Also able to reopen Friday are pools, libraries, casinos, VLTS in bars and restaurants, camping at full capacity, gyms, instrumental concerts and theatres.
