Murder suspect Udham Sandhu made a brief court appearance Thursday in connection with a hit-and-run that left a Calgary teen dead.

Sandhu was arrested May 28 and charged with second-degree murder and dangerous driving causing death in connection with the May 13 crash that killed Ibaad Yar, 15.

Sandhu’s lawyer hasn’t yet received full disclosure from the Crown and his case was adjourned three weeks. Sandhu remains in custody. Law student David Roper, appearing for defence counsel Balfour Der, told provincial court Judge Mike Dinkel an initial disclosure package has been received, but more is expected.

Sandhu, 37, is charged in connection with an incident police say involved a speeding Dodge Journey that was struck from behind by a Buick Allure around 2:30 a.m.

The Dodge was southbound on 52nd Street near 16th Avenue N.E. at the time of the collision.

An altercation ensued after the crash and the Buick later fled the scene, said police.

Yar was pronounced dead after he was ejected from the Dodge. Two other minors faced serious injuries and were transported to hospital.

A Gofundme page created by a family friend after the boy’s death described him as a “one-of-a-kind” teenager.

“He was a loving son, amazing brother, and a loyal friend.

Whenever he walked into a room, he made everyone happy,” the page reads.

“He had his entire life before him, and all he ever wanted was to see the people around him laugh and smile. Ibaad was kind, down to earth, and deserved more than what happened to him.”
