The pandemic may have led to the cancellation of this year’s Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth, but we’re celebrating the Stampede spirit by sharing favourite memories and photos from the archives. Today: The Stampede in the 1970s.
CHRONOLOGY OF THE STAMPEDE: 1970S
1970
The then-called Indian Village hosted ■ the World Chicken Dance Championships for the first time.
1971
The 70-member Stampede band ■
was started.
1972
World Figure Skating Championships
■ were held at the Stampede Corral.
The first indoor Rodeo Royal was
■
held from March 22 to 25.
1973
Queen Elizabeth opened the ■
Stampede.
1974
Indian Village was relocated from
■
Sun Tree Park to its home south of the Elbow River.
A new larger grandstand with a
■ 5/8th mile racetrack and infield were built at a cost of about $15 million.
1976
Calgary’s population hit 470,043 ■
and the Stampede broke a million visitors for the first time, with an attendance of 1,015,682.
1977
Prince Charles and Prince Andrew ■
opened the Stampede.
1979
Eleanor Bailey became the first
■
female Calgary Stampede director in 1979.
The first chuckwagon canvas
■
auction was held. The top bid was $3,400.
The “Stampede Slim” trademark
■
was developed in 1979; more than 30 souvenirs and novelty items were licensed to private manufacturers and distributors.
