Three people have been charged in connection with an attack on a senior in September during which his jacket was stolen.

The incident happened just after 11 p.m. on Sept. 22, when a man in his 70s was walking near 6th Avenue and 7th Street S.W.

Police say he was approached by a man and two women who demanded his jacket while allegedly threatening him with a handgun. They then grabbed the man's arms and pushed him to the ground, causing him to hit his head on the pavement, according to police. They took the jacket and fled.

The man was taken to hospital for minor injuries.

Last Friday, police carried out a search warrant on a home in the 2700 block of 17A Street N.W.

Following the search, police charged three people, including a minor, and recovered the jacket.

Tyler Mckenzie, 19, of Calgary, is charged with robbery with a restricted or prohibited firearm, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, robbery with a restricted or prohibited firearm, possession of an imitation weapon for a dangerous purpose, failure to comply with an undertaking and failure to comply with a release order.

Police also charged Sydney-lee Rosalie Saunders, 18, with possession of an imitation weapon for a dangerous purpose, robbery with a restricted or prohibited firearm and four counts of failure to comply with a release order.

A 17-year-old girl was charged with robbery with a restricted or prohibited firearm.

“This was a senseless attack on a senior for no greater reason than the suspects wanted the victim's jacket,” said Calgary police Sgt. Jodi Gach. “This has had lasting impacts on the victim and could have been even more serious. These kinds of attacks will not be tolerated.”
