Shimano Dura-ace C40 Carbon Tubeless Disc $2,600

When Shimano introduced the 9100 mechanical and 9150 Di2 Dura-ace groups in 2016, the company also took the opportunity to redesign its lineup of wheels, taking into consideration the rapid growth and acceptance of road disc brakes. The carbon-rimmed C40 has been one of the most popular and versatile wheelsets for many years, and the WH-R9170-C40-TL-R12, as the C40 carbon tubeless disc is more formally known, continues that trend. Shimano’s aerodynamic rim is 37-mm deep and 24-mm wide, allowing for the wider tires most riders are looking for today. Using 12-mm thru axle Dura-ace hubs with tried-and-true cupand-cone bearings, the rims have 24 spokes each and centre-lock rotor mounts. Combined weight comes in at 1,563 g. ( bike.shimano.com)

Campagnolo Bora WTO 60 $3,085

The new Bora wto 60 wheels are designed from start to finish with speed in mind. wto stands for “wind tunnel optimized,” as the Italian brand specifically aimed to make a wind-cheating wheelset. The carbon rims are 60-mm deep and 26.5-mm wide, and designed to run tubeless or clincher tires – continuing Campagnolo’s move away from tubular. Even the aluminum hubs were designed with aerodynamics and weight savings in mind with a curved shape while using ceramic bearings. Both wheels use elliptical cross-section spokes with 18 up front and 21 in the back. The Bora wto 60 weigh in at just 1,547 g and come with brake pads and valve extenders. ( campagnolo.com)

Enve G27 650B $3,360

After years of development, American brand Enve announced its new lineup of aluminum road hubs earlier this past January, allowing it to lower the price of its road wheels while still delivering a premium product. The G27 650B is Enve’s lightweight carbon gravel wheelset for use with disc brakes and tubeless tires. As the name implies, the G27 has a 27-mm inner rim width (35.5-mm outer) allowing you to run 650B tires up to 42 mm wide. Enve’s hookless bead design helps you avoid annoying pinch flats, even on the roughest of roads. The new aluminum hubs use reliable stainless steel bearings along with wide flange spacing and paired spoke holes for weight optimization and improved efficiency. The G27 are also available with Chris King hubs (pictured) for $3,960. ( enve.com)—dandakin
