When to go

Summer and fall are the best times to visit. September features the Fall Flavours Festival across the province, so if you’re food-interested, that’s the month for you. Or try to catch the Trail in a riot of fall colours in early October. The tourist season starts wrapping up in early October. Do book your accommodation early.

Where to stay

There’s no shortage of quaint, historic and bike-friendly accommodation in eastern p.e.i. The Revival-style Georgetown Historic Inn ( peigeorgetownhistoricinn.com) and the Inn at St. Peters ( innatstpeters.com) are two of the best known four-star spots. Or grab a seaside Airbnb and make day trips from there.

What to eat

Where to start? Try an americano at the Lucky Bean Café ( theluckybean.com) in Montague, the crab mac and cheese at The Wheelhouse ( wheelhouseingeorgetown.com) in Georgetown and fried clams at Clam Diggers ( clamdiggerspei.com) in Cardigan. Also, visit Laurie’s Country Kitchen ( facebook.com/lauriescountrykitchen) in Mount Stewart, and the Evergreen Café ( facebook.com/evergreencafesouris) and Poké Shack in Souris.

What to do off the bike

Get the full p.e.i. experience onboard Captain Perry Gotell’s fishing boat: a morning with Tranquility Cove Adventures ( tcapei.com) will teach you how mussels are farmed, how to catch lobsters and how to pull a mackerel out of the sea. You can also dig for bar clams with them. Explore the offerings of local artisans in all the towns. Or do some lighthouse hopping.
