HERRING HAVOC
THE HERRING POPULATION in the Gulf of St. Lawrence known as spring spawners, one of two herring populations in the region, will continue to decline over the next 10 years, says a new report released by Fisheries and Oceans Canada. Fewer births and less fish reaching maturity caused by environmental changes, including warmer ocean temperatures, is believed to be the main reason for continued decline. Ending the relatively small fishery for the population may not be enough to reverse its downward trend. François Turcotte, a marine biologist with DFO, told CBC, “It’s concerning because there’s no lever we can pull to make things better.”
