Celebrating Canada’s grandeur

Only about the size of a Canadian dollar coin, the red-eye medusa jellyfish is named for the red ”eyespots” circling the base of its tentacles. These are actually light-sensitive receptors that help it orient itself vertically as it drifts and feeds on plankton. Red-eye medusas such as this one, photographed in British Columbia‘s Browning Passage, Queen Charlotte Strait, inhabit coastal waters, often gathering in eelgrass beds, near the surface or around dock pilings.
