ON ‘PROMISED LANDS’ (MARCH/APRIL)

Congratulations on your recent issue! I particularly enjoyed the fascinating article “Promised lands.” I have driven from southwestern Ontario to the Cree lands along the eastern (Quebec) side of James Bay. Road access is very good; the remoteness and vast distances make you think and wonder about our country. The Quebec James Bay Cree have also dealt well with being forced to move. In their case, it was due to Hydro Quebec’s incredible hydroelectric projects. These involved huge areas of Cree land being flooded and considerable monetary compensation paid. Hydro Quebec in turn makes a lot of money, powering not only their province, but also parts of the New England states, with cleaner electricity.

Phil Christie St. Thomas, Ont. ON ACCESSIBLE READING (JANUARY/FEBRUARY)

Through a library service called CELA (Centre for Equitable Library Access) I read your January/february issue on my portable talking book machine and found it most fascinating. I would like to thank you and your staff for allowing CELA to include it in its magazine selection. I was particularly taken with the story of Mario Rigby and his walk across Africa and his cycling across Canada in support of exploration. Once I began listening, I found it very difficult to break away. When the next edition comes to CELA I’ll see that it gets to my talking book player.
