OH, CANADA!

-

With fewer than 149,000 Islanders, Prince Edward Island is our least populated province, and at 0.1 percent of the country’s total land area, it’s also the tiniest. But P. E. I. still occupies an outsize role in Canada’s national identity: The Maritime province’s deep- red clay soil, pristine beaches, lighthouses and rolling fields are iconic symbols both at home and abroad. Though its natural beauty and abundant charm can account for some of that fame, part of the credit belongs to Lucy Maud Montgomery, whose classic novel, Anne of Green Gables, introduced the world to a redheaded orphan and the beautiful province she called home.
