The 2016 Golden Shoe Awards

- By Tracey Tong, Tim Huebsch, Rich Wheater, Tara Campbell, Caela Fenton and Micheal Doyle

After a national reader’s survey and round-table conversations with our regular contributors and experts, we recognize the best and most essential runners, races, clubs and places in the country.

BEST RUNNING SPOT IN CANADA STANLEY PARK/SEAWALL

If you’ve ever spent time in Vancouver, this pick is a foregone conclusion. Stanley Park is one of the world’s most spectacular parks for running, featuring more than 27 kilometres of trails. Seconds after heading into the old growth forest you feel as though you’re far away from the city. The Seawall itself is a 9k paved multi-use path with a stunning panoramic view of Burrard Inlet, the Lions Gate Bridge, the city skyline, with North Vancouver’s mountains looming in the distance across the harbour.

BEST RACE OF 2016 OTTAWA RACE WEEKEND

Our readers adored a variety of races big and small from across the country, but our nation’s capital got the most love overall. Ottawa embraces its race weekend like no other in Canada. The event takes over the city starting on Thursday with a street party that rages all weekend, leading into the world-renowned and super fast 10k on Saturday night. The big 42.2k race on Sunday morning sees some of the biggest crowds outside of Boston and New York for a North American marathon. If you want a truly immersive vibe, Ottawa nails it.
