Gros Morne’s other-worldly geology was formed 1.2 billion years ago, as present-day Atlantic Canada collided with another continent. For budding scientists, those features are a textbook example of plate tectonics; for everyone else, they’re just plain stunning. With fog-draped mountains and inland bogs to Western Brook Pond, a freshwater fiord with 600-metre walls, and the Mars-like tablelands, where ancient rock from the Earth’s mantle was pushed to the surface — it is no wonder it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site.a
