Gros Morne’s other-worldly ge­ol­ogy was formed 1.2 bil­lion years ago, as present-day At­lantic Canada col­lided with another con­ti­nent. For bud­ding sci­en­tists, those fea­tures are a text­book ex­am­ple of plate tec­ton­ics; for every­one else, they’re just plain stun­ning. With fog-draped moun­tains and in­land bogs to West­ern Brook Pond, a freshwater fiord with 600-me­tre walls, and the Mars-like table­lands, where an­cient rock from the Earth’s man­tle was pushed to the sur­face — it is no won­der it’s a UNESCO World Her­itage Site.a
