Capers end baseball regular season in second place

NEW WATERFORD — Cape Breton University’s men’s baseball team ended its regular season tied for second place in the league after defeating Crandall University over two games on Saturday.

The Capers defeated Moncton’s entry in the Canadian Intercolle­giate Baseball Associatio­n at the Gerry Marsh Field in New Waterford by scores of 10-0 and 8-3.

Nathan Brewer pitched a twohitter with eight strikeouts for the win in game one, while Keith Nickerson was tagged with the loss.

Brewer also added three singles to CBU’s offence, while Jack MacNeil had two singles and a double and Josh Spooney had two doubles.

The hitters for Crandall were Nickerson and Sam Lund with singles.

In game two, Jack MacNeil pitched the win for the Capers, while John Schutt was tagged with the loss.

Johnny Robinson and Spooney both hit a single and a double for CBU, while David Gillis had two singles.

For Crandall, Sam Lund hit two singles, while Nickerson had a triple.

The Capers now advance to the Atlantic conference playoffs.

CBU will travel Halifax next weekend to play Saint Mary’s University in a semifinal. Game times are 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. on Saturday.

If a third game is necessary, it will be played at home in Cape Breton on Sunday.

If CBU wins their matchup against Saint Mary’s, they will earn a bye to the national conference playoffs.
