Wildcats squeak out win over Western Kings in high school football play
SYDNEY — The Sydney Academy Wildcats squeaked out a 15-8 win over the Western Kings Wolverines in Nova Scotia School Athletic Federation Football League action Saturday at the Open Hearth Field in Sydney.
Liam Stapleton kicked a punt single to open Wildcats’ scoring, while halfback Jarrad Detheridge scored a major from 36 yards out. Devin Marks was successful on the extra point to give the Academy team a 8-0 lead in the first quarter.
The Wolverines capitalized on a Wildcat turnover when their defensive back picked off Wildcat quarterback Geoff MacDonald’s pass attempt and scored a touchdown from 43 yards to close out the scoring for the opening half.
The Wildcats upped the score to 15-7 when Detheridge scored his second touchdown of the game with a 17-yard scamper to the end zone.
The Wolverines closed out the scoring for the afternoon with a punt single in the fourth quarter.
Defensively for the Wildcats, Nicolas Deveaux and Connor Victory each chipped in with five tackles.
The Carabins Bus Line offensive player of the game was Jarrad Detheridge, while Kobe ParkerBorden took the defensive honours.
Sydmey Academy (2-1) will take on the Prince Andrew Panthers (3-1) on Sunday with a 3:30 p.m. kickoff at the Open Hearth Field.
