It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our dear husband, father, brother, uncle and friend, Alex Winstanley on Saturday, Sep. 28, 2013, at the Northside General Hospital.

Born in Sydney Mines, he was the son of the late Thomas and Elizabeth (Bell) Winstanley.

Alex was a veteran of the Second World War, serving with the Canadian Army. After the war, he returned to his job with Sydney Steel Corporatio­n in Sydney and continued to work there for 43 years, retiring in 1984 as supervisor.

Alex was very active in his community volunteeri­ng his time to many organizati­ons over the years and had been a recipient of the Volunteer of the Year award for the Town of North Sydney, as well as being recognized for his efforts with a medal presented by Senator John M. Macdonald on behalf of the Government of Canada.

He was a life member and former president of Branch 19 Royal Canadian Legion in North Sydney, president of the Legion Bowling League for Cape Breton and past chairman of the Veteran’s Patient Comfort Fund.

Alex had been a member of the executive of the Northern Yacht Club in North Sydney for 19 consecutiv­e years and was instrument­al in bringing the World Snipe Races here in 1979.

He was an active member and former president of Seaview Curling Club in North Sydney, a member of St. Joseph Parish, North Sydney, and of the senior and funeral choirs.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Eileen (Scott) Winstanley; his son, Ken, at home; his sister, Norma Jean (Wolfgang) Madell, Fort Erie, Ont.; sisters-in-law, Patricia Billard, North Sydney, and Helen Hodge, Sydney Mines, as well as nieces and nephews, Paul, Lorraine, Nancy, Linda and Gregory.

Alex was predecease­d by his sisters, Muriel Porter, Marion Smith and brothers-in-law, Garnet Porter and Clarence Hodge.

Visitation for Alex will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., Tuesday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral mass will be held 10 a.m., Wednesday, at St. Joseph Church, with Rev. Patrick O’Neill officiatin­g. Burial will take place in Holy Cross Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to the Veterans Patient Comfort Fund or any charity.
