Bay Days needs volunteers

-

Bay Days festival organizers hope to make this year’s festivities the best ever, but they need the public to hop on board.

Cecil Saccary, treasurer, said there’s a need for volunteers for the festival which begins Thursday and continues until Sunday.

“We need people to help with some of the events going on,” he said. “It also wouldn’t hurt to have volunteers to help sell tickets for the duck race, because that’s our major fundraiser.”

Saccary said the fundraising is important to pay for the fireworks.

“We want to make this year’s fireworks the best the public’s ever seen, but we have to reach our target, make sure we can pay for it.”

Saccary said there are fireworks donation jars in businesses in the community. As well people can help by supporting the fundraisers including the annual duck race — sponsored by Meco Construction — being held Saturday at 2 p.m.

Tickets are $5 and can be purchased at the Bay Days office, Pharmasave, Glace Bay Shoe Store or the Chip Wagon.

There will be prizes of $1,500, $1,000 and $500.

Also Saccary said monetary donations are welcome. He’s confident the community will not want to miss the display this year.

Saccary also hopes residents will be part of the Bay Days parade on Thursday at 6 p.m. Registration is at Sobeys parking lot at 4:30 p.m.

“It’s going to be a busy, busy schedule every day.”

The Bay Days office celebrated its grand opening at 121 Commercial St., July 3. The office is open Monday to Friday 10 a.m.-12 p.m. and 2-4 p.m.
