Strong opening day for Farrell at junior/bantam championsh­ip

Lingan Golf and Country Club member Aubrey Farrell is in the hunt of the leaders at the Nova Scotia Golf Associatio­n junior/bantam golf championsh­ips at Bell Bay Golf Club.

Farrell is tied for fourth place with four others following at 6over-par 78 round in the boys juvenile division. Matthew Chandler of Chester Golf Club leads the pack thanks to a 1under-par 71. Not far behind Farrell is Seaview’s Ian Fraser, who shot a 7-over-par 79 and is tied for ninth spot.

Other Cape Breton players in the juvenile field include: Carson Guyaux, Lingan, 12 over par, tied for 20th; Cale Guyaux, Lingan, 13 over par, tied for 23nd; Kieran Ogrady and Graham Robinson, both from Seaview, 30 over par, tied for 48th; Michael Forrest and Lyndon Murrin, both of Seaview, 42 over par, tied for 50th; and Mark Campbell, Seaview, 52 over par, 52nd.

In the boys junior division, Mitchell Burke of Seaview is in ninth spot after scoring an 8over-par 80. Patrick Jackson leads the division at an even-par 72.

Sean Smith of Lingan is in 13th place with a 10-over-par 82. Brendan Smith is tied for 17th spot with a 13-over 85.

Rounding out the Cape Bre- ton golfers in the junior division are: Tyler Syms and Tanner Guyaux, both of Lingan, 17 over, tied for 22nd; Aaron Shaw, Seaview, 30 over par, 31st; and Matthew Jessome, Seaview, 47 over par, 32nd.

Colin Fraser from Seaview is alone in fifth place in the bantam Division 1 boys category (under 15). He scored an 11over-par 83, 10 strokes back of leader Ewan Jr. Kelly of Ashburn. Bell Bay’s Seamus Stears is in seventh place at 13 over par.

The Lakes player Andrew McCcaron is in third place in the Division 2 boys bantam competitio­n following a 16-over-par 88 round. Lingan’s A.J. Ley is tied for seventh spot at 23 over par.

Also participat­ing in the division are: Dell Welton, Bell Bay, 26 over par, 12th; Blake Cox, Seaview, 27 over par, 13th; Rory Morrison, Seaview, 38 over par, 20th; Jared Kublek, Seaview, 59 over par, 24th; and Ryan Power, Seaview, 74 over par, 25th.

Ken Wo Golf and Country Club member Heather McLean leads the girls bantam field with a 10-over-par 82. Allison Chandler of Chester Golf Club is tops in the girls junior division thanks to a 7-over-par 79. Ken Wo’s Meghan McLean is the top girls juvenile player after an opening round, 5-over-par 77.
