Liberals should correct mistake

-

After reading Ray Stapleton’s recent letter (‘ Where is the justice?,’ Cape Breton Post, March 21), I decided to check his facts.

The federal government actually took over the Human Rights Museum project in 2008 and the cost ballooned from $ 200 million to $ 351 million. It was supposed to open in 2012 but didn’t until September of 2014.

On the TransCanada Trail ( TCT) website I discovered that the federal government will also give 50 cents to the TCT for every dollar it raises.

The federal and provincial governments also give millions of dollars to local trail associations. A great deal of the TCT is in provincial or federal parks which means that governments are paying for their maintenance. How much does this cost?

The Liberals promised to remove “pettiness” from federal politics but they have cancelled three objects that the Tories supported: the airport on Toronto Island, the memorial to veterans of the Afghanistan War, and the lease for Green Cove to the Never Forgotten National Memorial.

The prime minister’s chief advisor, Gerald Butts, had this to say about the political process in the Ottawa Citizen: “This is a business that’s dominated by people who make quick, and in my view, rash decisions.”

The decision to renege on the four- year commitment of the Canadian government to the memorial for our fallen is such a decision.

The prime minister’s mandate letter to the environment minister instructs her “to work with nearby communities to help grow local eco-tourism and create jobs.” She was also instructed to “Develop Parks Canada programs and services so that more Canadians can experience our National Parks and learn more about our environment and heritage.”

A mistake has been made. It’s up to the Liberals to correct it. I implore them to do so.
