Sandra Pauline (Gillis) Curry, 72, of New Waterford, passed away peacefully March 27, 2016, at home surrounded by her loving family and friends.

Born and raised on Convent Street in New Waterford, she was a daughter of the late James A. and Ellen (LeBlanc) Gillis.

Sandra was a member of the former St. Agnes Church and currently the Parish Church of St Leonard, New Waterford.

Sandra graduated as a CNA from the VG Hospital in 1964 and worked as a nurse at hospitals in Halifax, Kentville, N.S., London, Ont., and Glace Bay. After marrying Joe on Aug. 3, 1968, and moving to Port Hawkesbury, Sandra focused on raising her family as well as helping her community. She served in many roles, including club president, in the Kinette Clubs of Port Hawkesbury and Nashwaaksi­s and also for the K-Ette Club of Nashwaaksi­s, making many great, lifelong friends along the way.

Sandra enjoyed playing bingo, darts, bowling and dancing and was always singing a song. She loved being in the company of her sisters and made great memories on many trips over the years.

She is survived by her loving husband of 48 years, Joseph Curry; sons, Blaise (Karen) of Halifax, Glenn (Daisy) of Montreal and Shaun of Fredericto­n. She cherished her six grandsons Ryan, Laughlin, Hagan, Nathan, Cameron and Cade, and her granddaugh­ter, Emily.

Surviving are sisters, Donalda (Murray) Ratchford, Trenton, Ont., Bridget Peters, Carmel Hulme (Wilfred) and Anne MacPherson (Ian), all of New Waterford, CWO (Ret) John (Allana), Fredericto­n, N.B., Ray (Linda), Onafray (Shirley), both of New Waterford, Col (Rtd) Jerry (Patricia), Marion Bridge, LCol (Ret) Joe ( Jacquie) of Grand Mira South; her aunt Rita Gouthro, New Waterford, and many loved cousins, nieces, nephews, grandniece­s and grandnephe­ws.

Visitation for Sandra will be held today (Tuesday) 2-4 and 79 p.m. in Curry’s Funeral Home, 775 Main St., Glace Bay. Funeral Mass of Resurrecti­on will take place on Wednesday at 1 p.m. in St. Leonard Parish Church in New Waterford, Father Ray Huntley presiding. Burial will follow in St. Agnes Cemetery. A luncheon will be hosted by the CWL at the parish hall on Convent Street.
