The Undercurrent Youth Centre’s major fundraiser has grown so much, the venue has changed three times.

This is the fifth year for the youth centre’s all-you-can-eat dessert and auction fundraiser which takes place Saturday in Glace Bay.

The youth centre is located in the Lighthouse Church.

“We’ve gone from using the small space in the church in the sanctuary to the gym and now this year to the Glace Bay fire hall because we needed the room,” said volunteer Jennifer Ludlow.

She said about 100 people attended the first event and more than 200 people were at last year’s fundraiser.

She attributes the increase in the popularity of the event to the increase in the number of youth at Undercurrent.

“The amount of kids that come to the youth centre has doubled in that time. There would be more parents coming out as well, and the community support has kept growing.”

She said the children belonging to the youth centre five years ago are now junior leaders, so support grows from the youth as well.

Ludlow said even the business community supports the centre and last year provided more than 100 items for the auction. The support is similar this year.

Ludlow said the desserts are also donated, coming from businesses, members of the church, youth leaders and volunteers.

“They come from everywhere we can get them. I have a message from a lady I don’t even know wondering when she can drop sweets off. My friends and family even bake. “

As well she said the event gained momentum, as it’s a lot of fun.

Alfie MacLeod, Sydney River-Mira-Louisbourg MLA, is the auctioneer and he brings along his friend Eddie Orrell, the MLA for Cape Breton North.
