FLYNN, Francis Darrell

-

It is with deepest sadness that we announce the passing of a beloved husband and father, Darrell Flynn, on July 6, 2016 surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Glace Bay on May 28, 1958, Darrell was the son of the late William and Emily (MacPherson) Flynn.

Darrell is survived by his wife of 35 years, Eileen (Gilday) and children, Pat and Emily Grace. He is also survived by his brother, Joseph Flynn (Helen); sister-in-law, Jan Gilday; niece, Eileen Coole, niece, Patsy (Barry LeBlanc) and their children, Brianna (Victor Manuel) and Jonathon; nephew, Danny Flynn (Christine) and their daughter, Danielle, nephew, Mark Flynn and Darrell’s sister-in-law, Olga Flynn. Darrell is also survived by his other sisters-in-law, Deane (Billy MacDonald), Trisha (Peter Campbell), Norma (Donnie MacAdam), Cathy (Kevin MacLeod) and their families. Darrell will also be sorely missed by his best friend, Allan MacKenzie and wife Joan; his many golfing companions and his dog Baily, his “little” buddy.

Darrell was an active member of his community, serving as Councillor for District 10 and previously serving as a school board member for the CBVRSB. He was honoured to be of service to his community in any way possible. He took great pleasure in helping others; his approachable and understanding manner made it easy for people to convey their concerns. He always tried his best to return every phone call and address every issue. Darrell had the privilege of being involved in many organizations, associations and boards to which he was genuinely grateful.

At the time of his death, Darrell was Owner/Operator of Swiss Chalet in Sydney, N.S, where he worked for 29 years. His dedication to his work and his staff members during this time resulted in a large extended family of past and current coworkers to which he referred to as his second family.

Darrell was predeceased by his parents, William and Emily Flynn; brothers, John Francis, Freddy and Earl Flynn.

The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the staff at Glace Bay Hospital as well as Cape Breton Regional Hospital for their care during this difficult time. The outpouring of love and support from our neighbors, family, colleagues and friends has been very comforting in our time of loss.

Visitation will be held Monday, July 11th from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. A funeral mass will take place at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 12th at St. Anne Church, Glace Bay, with Fr. Norman MacPhee officiating. Burial will follow in St. Anne Cemetery, Glace Bay.

Donations in his memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia.

Online expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family at: www.vjmcgillivray.ca.
