HICKEY, Margaret Marie

-

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our mother, Margaret Marie Hickey on Saturday, July 9, 2016 at Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, after a lengthy battle with cancer. Born on January 1, 1930 in Sydney, Margaret was the daughter of the late Dave and Margaret (Hayes) Piercey of Whitney Pier. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Margaret will be dearly missed by sons: Alan, David (Carol), Bruce (Sharon) and Lorne (Heather); grandchildren, Chris (Aimee) Hickey, Laura Hickey, Robyn (Craig) Gushue, Tara (Andy) MacDonald, Alison (Robert) Melski, Peter (Melissa) Kozera, Amanda Kozera, Aaron Hickey and 11 great-grandchildren, who will also miss their Nanny. Numerous nieces and nephews are also left to mourn her passing. Besides her parents, Margaret was predeceased by her husband, Johnnie, son, Shane, daughter, Marla, sisters, Cecelia McNeil, Theresa MacDonald, Chris Rudderham and brothers, Frank and Bob Piercey. Mom worked for over 30 years at the K-Mart, in the stock room and on the front desk. After her retirement she joined a variety of groups. She was a former member of the Inspirational Singers, Ukulele singers, Vonnie MacEachern singers, and the Red Hats Society. Margaret was a long-standing member of the Steelworkers & Sydney Pensioner’s Club where she volunteered for many functions and attended Saturday afternoon bingo, faithfully.

Margaret made many trips to Bangor and St. Mary’s for her bingo trips and traveled on bus tours to many locations over the years. We always joked that if there was a bus leaving Sydney, Mom would be on it. She made numerous friends and will be remembered fondly by all of them.

As per Margaret’s wishes, cremation has taken place. Visitation for the late Margaret Marie Hickey will be held on Tuesday, July 12, 2016 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Pier Community Funeral Home, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church Street). Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, July 13, 2016 at 10 a.m. in Holy Redeemer Church, Whitney Pier, with Fr. Alex MacLellan officiating. A reception will be held at the Steelworkers and Sydney Pensioner’s Club, Inglis St., following the church Mass. A private family interment will take place at Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks. Donations in memory of Margaret may be made to Loaves & Fishes or the An Cala Palliative Care Unit, Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Family gives a special thank you to Dr. Ann Francis D’Intino, Dr. Aboud and the staff at Palliative Care for the excellent care given to Margaret during her time of need.

Funeral Arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of Pier Community Funeral Home.

Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.pierfuneralhome.com. Family was everything to Mom. She will remain in our hearts and on our minds, always.
