NIGHT FIRE

-

A mobile home that was being used as a summer residence in Scotch Lake was destroyed in a Wednesday night blaze.

A fire Wednesday destroyed a mobile home in Scotch Lake that was being used as a summer residence.

Georges River Volunteer Fire Department responded at around 8 p.m. and remained on the scene until after midnight.

When firefighters arrived the mobile home was fully engulfed in flames.

“I called for assistance for tankers from Ross Ferry, Big Bras d’Or, Southside Boularderie, Frenchvale, Sydney and Florence,” said Georges River Fire Chief Travais Briand. “The mobile home, which was 68 ft. by 14 ft., had several additions. With the woods being so dry, I was concerned that if it did catch, we’d have a full-fledged forest fire. There are no fire hydrants in the area so we have to truck water from Johnston Road. The assistance from other departments shuttling water is critical.”

Briand said once the tin collapses, a mobile home fire can be difficult to extinguish.

“We brought in a machine to stir up the debris and make sure there were no hotspots,” he said. “Including my own department, we probably had 25 volunteers on scene. It created quite a stir in the community.”

One firefighter was treated for heat exhaustion at the scene.

The mobile home was unoccupied at the time of the fire.

The cause of the fire is undetermined. The file has been turned over to the Cape Breton Regional Police Service.
