Ten men charged with fishery offences

Accused of fishing for gaspereau in Grand Lake

Ten men facing a combined total of 42 charges under fishery regulation­s are scheduled to return to provincial court in September to enter pleas.

The accused all allegedly violated the act while fishing for gaspereau in Grand Lake, near Sydney, on May 31.

Also known as alewife, gaspereau is a herring species and commonly used as bait by lobster fishermen.

The accused made a brief court appearance earlier this week and their cases were adjourned until Sept. 21.

Charged are Daniel Lloyd Munden, 54, of Brookland Street, Glace Bay; Stephen J. Munden, 31, King Edward Street, Glace Bay; Dennis A. Borden, 47, of Donkin Highway; John Christophe­r Borden, 42, of MacLean Street, Donkin; Michael Terrance Borden, 20, of Donkin Highway; James Christophe­r Borden, 18, of MacLean Street, Donkin; James Stephen Murrant, 46, of Donkin Highway; Carson James Sullivan, 25, of Reserve Street, Glace Bay; and James Patrick Fortune, 54, of Highland Street, Glace Bay.

Each are charged with obstructin­g a fish way, hindering fish entering a fish way, fishing with more than one dip net and possession of fish caught in contravent­ion of the act.

Another accused, Ryan Joseph Munden, 35, of Atlantic Street, Glace Bay, faces similar charges along with two additional offences of obstructin­g a fishery officer and fishing for gaspereau while prohibited.
