-

Big Bras d’Or

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Agnes Summerville Marshall MacAulay, age 88, on Wednesday, August 24, 2016, at the Palliative Care Unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Agnes was a loving mother of four, grandmother of eight, greatgrandmother of seven, aunt and friend to so many people.

Born in Florence on September 22, 1927, she was the daughter of the late John and Mary Ann (Russell) Robertson. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family of eight other siblings.

In 1946 after she married her husband John Willie, she moved to Big Bras d’Or where she resided for the past 70 years. In her early years she stayed at home to raise her family but in later years she worked as a cook and baker in various restaurants, the last being The Clansman Motel in North Sydney. She joyfully spent hours making homemade bread and knitting endless woolen socks that were eventually distributed to friends and neighbors. She was a member of St. James Presbyterian Church in Big Bras d’Or and served in the choir for a number of years. She particularly enjoyed her affiliation with the Big Bras d’Or Hall where she volunteered many hours and enjoyed the cherished friendships and activities of which she was a part. She was actually a founding member of the Big Bras d’Or Hall committee.

Agnes is survived by her three children, her daughters, Linda (John) Collingwood, Blanche (Kirk) MacKenzie and her son, Curtis (Yvonne) MacAulay; her 8 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren and her nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, John Willie MacAulay in February 1980 and her son, Blair in March 2016 and also by her siblings, Thomas, William, John, Jean, Chris, Marion, Lillian and Jessie.

Our family wishes to express sincere thanks to Dr. Beth MacCormick for the wonderful care provided to mom over the years. Special thanks also to the staff of the Palliative Care Unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital for the excellent care and service given to mom during her last days.

Visitation for Agnes will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Sunday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Monday at St. James Presbyterian Church, Big Bras d’Or with Rev. Peter MacDonald officiating. Burial will follow in St. James Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be sent to St James Presbyterian Church, c/o Gwen MacLean 11 Loch Bhreagh Drive, Boularderie East, NS, B1X 1J7 or to the Friends of Big Bras d’Or Hall, c/o Mike MacDonald, 34 Lakeview Dr., Big Bras d’Or, NS, B1X 1Z1.
