Something to sing about

Savoy planning auditions for upcoming show

-

If you’re over the age of 18 and can sing, the Savoy Theatre wants to hear from you.

The Savoy is searching for talented singers/actors, who can perform in a show to feature a number of male leads. Even those with no previous experience are encouraged to apply. The show, for which these particular auditions are being held, remains a secret for now.

Manager Pam Leader says hosting auditions is always the best way to see who is out there.

“Natural talent flows freely through every part of this island,” said Leader. “We know we have no shortage of that, but the audition process lets us see who will work well together. It’s not about finding the perfect voice, but more about what voices will compliment each other. And we love to find hidden gems, so first-timers, please apply. We want to see everyone. The familiar and the new. It’s a great opportunity and will be a lot of fun.”

Auditions are open to everyone over the age of 18. Vocal training is an asset but is not a necessity. Stage experience is also an asset, but isn’t necessary. Participants will be asked to perform their favourite rock and roll song from the 1950s and prepare a short monologue or tell a short story. A performance resumé and a 5 x 7 headshot are also requested. An accompanist will be on hand. Sheet music is welcome but not required.

“We know not everyone is comfortable doing an audition; it can be a nerve-wracking experience, especially if you’ve never done one,” says Leader. “But we really hope to make it as stress-free as possible, so we get as many people as we can.”

Auditions will be held at the Savoy Theatre, September 28, 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Those interested in participating will need to be available for rehearsals throughout various dates in February and March 2017, with a performance scheduled for March 2017. Book an audition time via email only.12

Pam Leader adds that not getting a part after an audition shouldn’t be seen as a failure by any means. “If you audition, then at least we know that you’re out there. Even if you don’t make the cut the first time around, we plan to continue to cast locally, so it’s good for you to be seen and let us know you’re interested.”
