Turkey dinner highlight of St. Joseph’s fall fair

The island’s famous St. Joseph’s Bras d’Or Fall Fair, scheduled for Wednesday, promises to provide another great eating experience. The fair, co-ordinated by the St. Joseph Catholic Women’s League, has been an ongoing event for half a century, and is a major fundraiser for the local church. The main feature of the fall fair is the turkey dinner with all the trimmings, including home baked pies for dessert, for only $12. While only two hours are scheduled for the fair (from 4-6 p.m.), the expectation is that some 800 people will avail themselves of the meal. This includes takeouts which are available from the Bras d’Or Seniors and Pensioners Hall, Main Street, Bras d’Or.

Over all those years, the CWL has successfully served almost every person who came to the hall, said CWL member Agnes Gaskell.

In addition to the meal, a flea market, craft table, home baking and preserve tables are also featured, as is a merchandise/grocery bingo following the dinner.

Doors will open at 3:30 p.m. for early shoppers, with the meal scheduled for a 4 p.m. start. Bingo will follow at 7 p.m.

On display during the dinner will be a number of items to be drawn for during bingo. Tickets will be available on these items as well as for the big ticket draw prior to, during and following the meal.

There are countless hours of preparation between the sale of the tickets, collecting for the merchandise bingo and getting ready to cook and serve the supper.

ers who volunteer to make the event such a success as well as an opportunity for the parish to come together as a group,” Gaskell said.

While Wednesday is the highlight of the fair, not to be forgotten is the children’s fair on Thursday at 3 p.m. There will be children’s bingo, a fish pond, hotdogs and the popular cakewalk, to name just a few. Entertainment will be provided from 3-4:30 p.m.

Proceeds from the fall fair goes to the operation of St. Joseph’s parish.
