NEARING, John Charles

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of John Charles Nearing, 96, of Sydney, who passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 24, 2016 at his home.

Johnny was the son of the late Jack and Catherine (Morrison) Nearing of New Victoria. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Johnny was employed with Devco for 39 years as a coal miner. He worked at Collieries 18, 26 and 12. He retired from the machine shop in Glace Bay. He was a veteran of the Second World War serving as a dental assistant. He was a life time member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 138 Ashby and an active volunteer in the annual poppy campaign which he really enjoyed. Dad took pride in his vehicles and loved sports. He has always been a fan of Detroit Red Wings and Toronto Blue Jays.

Recently celebratin­g 65 years of marriage with the love his life, Yolande and up until his last day they enjoyed being outside holding hands on their swing. They enjoyed bowling, playing darts, shuffleboa­rd and dancing at Club 55 and the Pensioner club. They loved to travel and were lucky enough to have travelled to different parts of the world. Most of all he loved being surrounded by family and friends. His grandchild­ren and great grandchild­ren meant the world to him.

Johnny is survived by his loving wife, Yolande (Guyomard); his children, Robert, Claude (Cathy), Steve (Shauna), Brenda (Scott) King and Madelyn; grandchild­ren, Charles (Ayumi) Nearing, Allison (Andrew) Davis, Samantha King, Ryan and Adam Nearing; greatgrand­children, Olivia and Maggie Davis, Noa and Hiro Nearing and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predecease­d by his darling daughter, Judy; his siblings, Mikey, Ernest, Neil, Freddy, Edna, Annie, Jenny, Aldrick and Eileen.

Visitation will be held from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. on Friday, September 30, 2016 at T.W.Curry Parkview Chapel. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 1 at St. Theresa’s Church with Rev. Dennis Lamey officiatin­g.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Johnny’s memory may be made to MADD Cape Breton chapter.
