PLICHIE, Carmel Margaret “Mellie”

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Carmel “Mellie” Plichie, age 83 of Glace Bay on Thursday, February 2, 2017 at the Glace Bay Hospital with her family by her side.

Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late Gerald and Margaret (Bryden) Bates.

Mellie loved to do gardening with her husband, Roy “Sonny” Plichie. At one time they operated a greenhouse out of their former residence on Winnifred Square. But mostly, Mellie will be remembered as a loving mother who was always there for her children. In her early years she was employed at the Metropolit­an Store, Glace Bay and then as a homemaker. Mellie and her husband Sonny were foster parents for many years as well as volunteers for the Cancer and Diabetic Associatio­n.

Mellie is survived by one daughter, Carol (Danny) Gallagher; two sons, Tyrone (Gerri) Plichie, Raymond “Rocky” (Gen) Plichie; five sisters, Maurena (John) MacNeil, Sydney, Anna (Ron) Patterson, Sydney, Mary (Eldon) Smith, Bedford, N.S., Rosalie (Gerard “Al”) Moores, Glace Bay, Rita (Jim) Rudderham, Sydney; three brothers, Tommy, Halifax, Kevin (Ann) Bates, Reserve Mines, Frank (Adele) Bates, Glace Bay and her in-laws, George Close, Rudy Plichie, Corletta Fenner and Margie O’Brien.

Mellie will be sadly missed by her eight grandchild­ren, Danielle, Christian, Ryan, Shane, Anthony, Brandon, Angelina, Maria and three great-grandchild­ren, Nicholas, Colston and Larkin.

Besides her parents, Mellie was predecease­d by her husband, Roy “Sonny” Plichie; Stepfather, Charles Kublek; two brothers, Jerry, Joey; one sister, Theresa Close; two sons, Tony, Joseph and grandson, Raymond Jr.

Cremation has taken place. A funeral service will be held on Monday morning at 11 a.m. followed by a reception, all in V.J. McGillivra­y Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay.

Interment will take place at a later date in St. Anthony’s Cemetery.

Donations in memory of Mellie may be made to the N.S. Lung Associatio­n, Diabetes Associatio­n or a charity of one’s choice.
