Challenge Cup starts Friday
Proceeds from tournament donated to charity
The organizer of a fundraiser tournament this weekend is hoping even people who don’t watch hockey will show up in the spirit of helping others.
The 14th annual Mickey’s Original Six Challenge Cup kicks off at the Dominion rink Friday at 6 p.m.
“We ask people to come support their team and if they don’t have a team to come and support a charity,” said Mickey McNeil, founder of the Mickey’s Original Six Hockey Society. “People do come to contribute which is awesome as by doing this they are helping someone else.”
Montreal and Detroit will begin the tournament at 6 p.m., followed by Chicago and Toronto at 7 p.m. and New York and Boston at 8 p.m.
Each team plays two games and the competition continues until midnight.
The tournament will resume at 9 a.m. Saturday for the finals. The two teams top teams will face off for Challenge Cup at 12 p.m.
Admission to the rink is $3 for adults and children are admitted free. Proceeds will go to a charity chosen by the society.
Last year $500 was raised and it went to assisting people in need in Dominion and area with oil and food.
Following the competition on Saturday, McNeil will turn his attention to Hockey Night in Canada to learn which arenas have been selected for the Kraft Hockeyville contest.
The Dominion Rink is one of more than 500 arenas from across the country that applies to the contest every year.
Kraft Hockeyville is an annual competition sponsored by Kraft Foods, the National Hockey League and the NHL Players Association. Communities compete to demonstrate commitment to the sport of hockey.
Kraft will choose 10 finalists and the public votes for the winner. The winning community receives $100,000 in arena upgrades plus the opportunity to host a pre-season NHL game.
The runner-up receives $100,000 in arena upgrades and the other eight contestants receive $25,000 each.
