Capers advance to AUS semifinals with win over Sea Hawks
The Cape Breton University Capers are off to the Atlantic University Sport women’s basketball semifinals.
The Capers advanced to the final four after beating the Memorial University Sea Hawks 55-53 in quarter-final action at Scotiabank Centre on Friday.
Memorial led 27-20 at half time, before Cape Breton pulled ahead by dropping 26 points in the third quarter to take a 46-39 lead. The Sea Hawks fought back with 14 points in the fourth quarter, but the Capers would hold on for the win.
Jalynn Skeir powered the offense for the Capers with a game-high 24 points in the win. Valentina Primossi and Alison Keough of Marion Bridge each chipped in with eight points for Cape Breton.
Sydney Stewart led the Sea Hawks with 15 points in the loss. Graciela Diaz-Brito netted 12 points, and Sydney Ezekiel chipped in with nine points for Memorial.
In the other quarter-final game earlier in the day, Acadia University defeated the University of Prince Edward Island 80-66. Acadia will now face Saint Mary’s in the semifinals at 1 p.m. today.
Meanwhile, the Capers will play the University of New Brunswick in semifinal action today at 3 p.m.
The winner of each semifinal game will advance to the AUS championship game on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Scotiabank Centre. The winner will earn a spot in the 2017 Arcelormittal Dofasco U Sports Women’s Basketball Final 8 championship, next week, in Victoria, B.C.
