It is with sadness that we the family announce the passing of Dennis Haighway, age 91, on Saturday, March 4, 2017 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.

Born May 1, 1925, he was a WWII veteran, serving with The Royal Navy from 1939- 1945; having three sailings across the Atlantic during The Battle of the Atlantic. After the war he was employed in Ontario until his retirement. He was a member of several legions; lastly with Royal Canadian Legion Br. No. 78, Dominion. He enjoyed his time volunteeri­ng with St. John’s Ambulance and received their award, The Royal Order of St. John, for his years of dedication.

Dennis will be sadly missed by his family, daughter, Mary; sons, James and Ben; five grandchild­ren and seven great-grandchild­ren.

Besides his parents, he was also predecease­d by his wife, Jane O’Grady of Dublin; six siblings and his grandson, William.

In honoring his request there will be no visitation or funeral service.

Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of V.J. McGillivra­y Funeral Home, 16 Reserve Street, Glace Bay.

Committal will be at a later date.

Memorial donations in his memory to the Hospice Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton or Cadets of Cape Breton would be appreciate­d.
