Former school should be demolished

-

Anyone who grew up in the Westmount and surrounding area knows that MacLennan Junior High/Middle School was once a wonderful time place to attend. The school was an integral part of the community.

Over the years, however, vandalism started to take its toll in the form of broken windows, spray painted doors, etc., and since its closing last year the vandalism has ramped up substantially.

The school has become a target for disrespect by vandals who have broken every window and spray painted (not to be confused with thoughtfully constructed tags) the exterior with profanity. Glass lines the parking lot and road where vehicles drive by daily. Large rocks are strewn throughout classrooms and hallways. Fire extinguishers are being used to destroy any glass that has been left untouched.

I have witnessed and heard the police sirens regularly responding to the premises. My children are concerned about the police presence as they know that it often means the former school has once again been damaged.

I know things take time, but I cannot help but wonder at what point the municipality will step in and tear this building down? Do the first responders need to get hurt? Do the maintenance men and women who are there regularly need to get hurt?

I have no concern for the vandals. I just wish some arrests could be made.

Please tear this building down before something terrible happens. Those who loved the school would like to see the right thing happen before it is too late. Jennifer Morrison Westmount
