MARCH BREAK CENTRAL

Library staff leads the way for children’s activities.

Through the years it’s been library users who tend to benefit most from an enthusiasm for March break activities at the Cape Breton Regional Library.

That trend is no different with the 2017 collection of daily programs that range from theme nights featuring mythical literary characters, to science- based initiatives and other activities for eager students and their parents.

“We have some new staff members so that is really nice. It brings in fresh ideas and new energy and that is helpful,” said Tara MacNeil, programs co- ordinator with the Cape Breton Regional Library.

“We’ve definitely had people call and ask ‘ what are you going to do’ … so there’s a bit of pressure building because we know people are looking for it. Once we get a couple of calls in January and February … we start to kind of have to produce something.”

In previous years, library staff has noticed that kids on break are geared for action and fun when they walk through the doors of libraries around Cape Breton whether it be morning, afternoon or night.

Activities they’ve designed to meet that demand are for all ages, which is a bit of a stretch from normal day-to-day events that tend to be for the preschool crowd.

Highlights in the coming week will include Harry Potter Day, a claymation workshop, Lego activities, a family fort night, board games and coding activities.

Some of the library programs fill up fast, so your best bet is to call ahead to register.

Should any of them be filled up on your day of choice, you can expect to find plenty of other activities on the March break schedule at other spaces and institutions around the island.
