Local hockey teams will have their eyes set on Cape Breton championships this weekend and next, when the island’s prestigious trophies are awarded.

The Cape Breton Cup, a championship for teams playing in the Cape Breton ‘AA’/’AAA’ Hockey League, will be presented this weekend on Sunday. The Atom ‘AA’ championship will be awarded in Port Hood, while the Peewee ‘AAA’ title will be presented in North Sydney.

League president Jim (Fred) Head said the Cape Breton Cup tournament is something teams look forward all season.

“The Cape Breton Cup is a stepping stone for teams to qualify for provincial tournaments in Nova Scotia,” he said. “This is what minor hockey comes down to, playing in the final provincial tournament of the year.”

The Atom ‘AA’ champion will advance to the Hockey Nova Scotia Day of Champions on mainland Nova Scotia. Meanwhile, the two teams who play off in the Cup final in the Peewee division will advance to the provincial championships in Pictou County on March 23-26. The championship game for the Peewee division is scheduled for Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Emera Centre in North Sydney, while the Atom championship is set for 2:30 p.m. at the Al MacInnis Sports Centre in Port Hood.

Cape Breton Cup tournaments will also take place next week, March 16-19, with the Bantam ‘AA’ championship being hosted at the Bayplex in Glace Bay, while the Midget ‘AA’ tournament is scheduled for the New Waterford and District Community Centre. Schedules were not available at press time.
