Feds announce support for sports tourism ventures
Two funding announcements on Wednesday have one goal of making Port Hawkesbury a premier sports-tourism destination.
The federal government, through the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency’s business development program, announced $87,000 in funding to help the town host the 2017 Elite 10 Grand Slam of Curling event, which begins play today at the Port Hawkesbury Civic Centre.
Additional support to the tune of $35,000 from the province’s Department of Communities, Culture and Heritage was announced last week.
“A diverse tourism industry is vital to building a strong, sustainable economy for our region,” said Rodger Cuzner, MP for Cape Breton-Canso, in a press release.
“That is why we are pleased to partner with the Town of Port Hawkesbury as it works to promote the area as a sports-tourism destination, complementing other offerings in the Strait area, and encouraging visitors to extend their stay.”
The Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling begins in Port Hawkesbury today and runs through Sunday, bringing with it the top 10 curling teams from around the world.
The event is expected to attract 60 athletes, along with personnel from Sportsnet television and international media organizations.
Previously, Port Hawkesbury has hosted the Nationals, another large curling event, as recently as 2013, and five Grand Slam of Curling events since 2005.
“This event not only highlights the tremendous resource that our community volunteers have become, but also builds upon our town’s capacity to host prestigious sporting events. We are so excited to welcome the coaches, athletes, fans and media to our region,” said Paula Davis, director or marketing, recreation, tourism and culture for the town.
