Reward offered to solve farmer’s murder
Beaver Brook man was shot while going about morning chores
Yuill McGregor cherished his uncle to the point he refers to him as “a walking Jesus Christ” because of his kind and benevolent ways.
So McGregor was understandably pleased to learn an up to $150,000 reward is being offered for information about the murder of the elderly Colchester County farmer almost 26 years ago.
“I’m optimistic that the person(s) responsible for my uncle’s murder will now be brought to justice,” he said.
Justice Minister Diana Whalen announced the reward offer in the murder of Elmer Yuill, which occurred on Oct. 26, 1991.
“Families who have lost loved ones to violence deserve answers,” she said. “I urge anyone with information about this crime to tell police what they know.”
Yuill, who owned the successful Elm Knolls dairy farm in Beaver Brook, was found face down on his barn floor by an employee. He had been shot twice.
RCMP believe Yuill was killed by “one or more people” who were hiding in the barn loft.
The reward is being offered by the RCMP and the province through the Rewards for Major Unsolved Crimes Program.
“We believe there are people with critical information in relation to Mr. Yuill’s death and adding it to the program is one more investigative tool we can use to help track down that information,” said Cpl. Calvin Byard, Northeast Nova major crimes unit.
McGregor feels the reward will serve to bring out those who may have been unable or were reluctant to come forward in the past.
“I’m also optimistic that the RCMP, who have promised to review the file again, will be able to find something in it that may link any new information that does come forward out of this new reward,” he said.
