Third generation volunteer firefighte­r Kayla Steele has been with the North Sydney Volunteer Fire Department for four years. She is following in the footsteps of her father Kenny Steele, who has 35 years with North Sydney and her grandfathe­r Bunny Steele, who also served with the department. When she was younger Kayla used to attend the Atlantic Burn Camp with her father where she volunteere­d as a junior counselor. This opened her eyes to the tragedies that can happen and strengthen­ed her resolve to assist people on what could be their worst day.
