Passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 5, 2017, at the age of 89, at the Victoria General Hospital in Halifax.

He was the son of the late Roderick and Elizabeth (MacNeil) Johnston of Sydney.

A truck driver by trade, he was a great bear of a man who liked nothing better than to be behind the wheel.

Donald is survived by his loving wife, Dena (Carmichael) and daughters, Donalda (Darren), South Bar, Elaine and Leone, Halifax and his greatest joy, grandchild­ren, Mary Beth, James and Peter. He is also survived by sisters, Annie (Peter) Chapdelain­e, Margaret MacDonnell, Beverly (Irvin) Brown, all of Sydney, Roberta “Bobby” MacDougall, Halifax and Lorraine (Terry) Crich, St John, NB. He will be greatly missed by his many nieces and nephews.

He was predecease­d by brothers, Robert (Stella), John (Beatrice), Edward (Mamie), William “Willie” (Florence), Mike (Anne), Raymond and sisters, Laura (Bill) Wood, Elizabeth “Betty” (Les) Miller, Martha (Charlie) Capstick, Katherine “Kay” (Fred), Mary (Ralph) Carbury and by sister, Margaret in childhood.

Visitation will be Wednesday, April 12, 2017 from 12-2 p.m. in the SW Chant and Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney.

Funeral to follow at 2 p.m. also in the SW Chant and Son Funeral Home with Fr. Bill Burke officiatin­g. Reception to follow. Burial in Resurrecti­on Cemetery, Sydney Forks.

Memorial donations may be made to the Autism Society of Nova Scotia.
