CAMPBELL, Raewill

Boularderie East/Sydney Mines

-

Four months prior to her 104th birthday, we announce the passing of our Aunt Raewill Campbell, on April 12. Born on August 2, 1913 in Boularderie East, she was the eldest child of Archibald and Flora (Patterson) MacDonald.

Married to the late James Campbell (deceased in 1978) they resided on MacBelger Cresent. Aunt Raewill and Uncle Jimmy were both employed for a number of years as caretakers at Boularderie School.

Upon Jimmy’s passing, Aunt Raewill remained fiercely independent. She maintained their property on MacBelger Crescent, and was very fortunate to have her friends Mabel and M.J. MacEachern, and Mae and Gord MacKenzie, keeping a watchful eye.

Our Aunt was also very strong-willed, passionate about politics, and adamant on buying only Canadian products. She kept very current on both world and local news, and she was very involved in her community. She especially enjoyed quilting days with Gavinna and the ladies.

Nearing 100 years of age, she decided it was time to leave the country and move into town. She settled into her apartment in Sydney Mines, but dearly missed her Bourlarderie home.

Aunt Raewill enjoyed excellent health. She had never had an overnight hospital stay until 98 years of age. She remained living independently for 102 years, largely due to her caring nephew Ron. It was only within the past year and a half that her health declined to the point she was unable to stay at home. Thank you to the staff at the Northside General Hospital for your excellent care and kindness over the past year and a half.

Besides her parents, Raewill was predeceased by her husband, James; brothers, Archibald (Evelyn) and Charles; foster sister, Gladys; brothers and sisters-in-law, and nephew, Gordon.

She is survived by foster sister, Nellie Betts; nephews, Ron MacDonald and Duncan (Denny) MacDonald; nieces, Joan (Charlie) Serroul, Wanda MacDonald, Heather MacDonald and Gladys (Gerald) Eeles.

Visitation for Raewill Campbell will be held on Monday, April 17, 2017 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in J.M. Jobes funeral Home, Sydney Mines. A funeral service celebrating her life will take place Tuesday at 11 a.m. in St. James Presbyterian Church, Big Bras d’Or, with Rev. Peter MacDonald officiating, with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations in Raewill’s memory may be made to St. James Presbyterian Church, or a charity of one’s choice. Words of comfort may be forwarded to the family at www.jmjobesfuneralhome.com.
