It is with deep sorrow that we the family announce the passing of Michael Joseph Young, age 75, on Thursday, April 13, 2017 at the Northside General Hospital.

Born in North Sydney, he was the son of the late Joseph William and Appolonia ‘Polly’ (Garnier) Young.

Michael was employed as a stevedore with Marine Atlantic in North Sydney for 42 years, retiring in 1996.

He was a lifelong member of St. Joseph Parish in North Sydney.

He enjoyed serving his community as a member of the Knights of Columbus, Kiwanis Golden K Club, the Meals on Wheels Program and the North Sydney Historical Society. He was a former member of the North Sydney Volunteer Fire Department. In the past, Michael enjoyed singing in the Fireman’s Choir and being one of Santa’s helpers at children’s Christmas parties for many years.

Michael will be dearly missed by his wife of 47 years, Cavell (Stubbert) Young; his son, Joseph (Debbie) Young, North Sydney; daughter, Lynn (James) Hoare, North Sydney and his cherished granddaugh­ters, Catherine and Claire Hoare and Alexandra Young.

Also surviving are his brothers and sisters, Anita (Ron) Gillis, Dennis (Linda) Young, Iris Young, all of North Sydney and Blaise (Kathleen) Young, Alberta; sister-in-law, Anne Young, Westville, NS and several nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, Michael was predecease­d by his brother, Ralph Young and sister, Madonna Young.

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral Mass will take place 10 a.m. Tuesday, at St. Joseph Church North Sydney with Rev. Patrick O’Neill officiatin­g. Burial will take place in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Sydney at a later date.

Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Associatio­n.
