Godsent reuniting for concert

Members of the musical group Godsent will reunite Sunday to perform during a concert in support of St. Matthew Wesley United Church.

“Things have changed a lot since we were all in junior high and high school, singing on weekends and between classes,” said group member Bhreagh Ross. “As everyone gets busy with studies and careers, this is a good chance to do something good for the community and do something we all love, which is singing. It doesn’t matter where we end up or how old we get we will always be Godsent.”

Ross, 21, who at one time was known as the Godsent mascot because she was too young to join, will perform Sunday at 7 p.m. along with Meredith Higgins, Tiffany MacDonald, Maia Greig and Holly Gillis. It is expected that several other former members of the group will also perform.

“That’s going to be a bit of a surprise,” said Keith Burton, Godsent’s director and the musical director at St. Matthew Wesley. “We aren’t sure who else is coming, but whomever shows will be welcome to join us on stage.”

Also performing during Sunday’s concert will be Cape Breton Chordsmen, Colin Grant

and Cecil Clarke.

Godsent formed in 1996 as a church youth choir and evolved into an established local gospel choir featuring members from 14-21 years of age, who hailed from the Sydney and Northside areas.

Over the years Godsent performed across Cape Breton and the Maritimes and as far as Bermuda, sharing their music. They are well known on the island having performed at countless community and church fundraisers.

“It’s going to be a great

show,” Ross said. “It’s great to see how everyone has matured over the past three years and it will be great to get together with Colin Grant, an original

member of Godsent, the Cape Breton Chordsmen and Cecil Clarke.”

Keith Burton, who started the group, said Godsent released two CDs.

“It will be great to have as many as possible back for the concert. We were together so much, we are family,” he said. “There will be a mix of music, some gospel, traditional Cape Breton music and some pop and country. It should prove to be an excellent show.”
