GOUTHRO, Donald Hector ‘Hec’

The family of Hector Gouthro of Dominion, age 75, regret to announce his passing on Monday, April 17, 2017 at home surrounded by family after a lengthy battle with congestive heart failure.

Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Russell and Sally (McNeil) Gouthro.

He was a member of Immaculate Conception Parish, Bridgeport and a lifetime member of The Knights of Columbus Council 1953.

Hec held many jobs over the years including work with the Boiler Makers of Nova Scotia and Nova Scotia Power. He coached Dominion Hockey Clinic and Dominion Baseball over the years and was a member of Immaculate Conception Parish Council.

In the years since he had retired, he enjoyed sports and the outdoors which included skiing, golfing, biking and shooting pool. His biggest joy in life was always spending time with his family.

Besides his parents, he was predecease­d by his brother, Jack Gouthro and his wife, Anne; his sister, Audrey Gouthro and brothers-in-law, Alex O’Neil and Keith MacDonald.

Hec is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Veronica ‘Bina’ nee O’Neil; sons, Russell (Angela), Dominion and Donnie (Trina), Truro; daughter, Mary Beth (Chris) Lantz, Dayspring and his precious grandchild, Selina Lantz.

He is also survived by his sisters, Betty (Crawford) Tracy, Glace Bay, Claire (Laird) Wilton, Glace Bay; sisters-in-law, Dianne O’Neil, Dominion; Simone MacDonald, Moncton and many nieces and nephews.

We, the family, would like to extend our sincere thanks and great fullness to the Palliative Care Team and the VON.

Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held on Thursday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivra­y Funeral Home, 16 Reserve Street, Glace Bay. The Funeral Mass to be held at Immaculate Conception Church in Bridgeport is Friday at 11 a.m., Fr. Dan Boudreau officiatin­g. A reception will follow in the church hall. Interment will be in the parish cemetery at a later date.

Knights of Columbus members are asked to meet at the funeral home on Thursday evening at 7:30 p.m. for a prayer service.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Canada and Cape Breton Palliative Care.
