Expect delays

CBRM roadwork projects begin next week

The Cape Breton Regional Municipality has announced its first roadwork street closures of the construction season.

They begin on Monday when sections of Commercial Street and Royal Avenue in Dominion will be down to one lane for a waterline replacement project that’s expected to continue into the summer.

Traffic will be stop-and-go in the construction zone, however detours to traffic flow may also occur.

Work is also slated to begin at Inglis Street in Sydney from Union Street to High Street for a waterline upgrade and road rebuild. Work on Hare Street in North Sydney will begin on Tuesday with a waterline and road rebuild project.

Mayor Cecil Clarke outlined a $16-million project last September for improvements to the municipality’s water and wastewater systems. The project represents 14,400 days of employment for workers at over 40 sites.

“As the asphalt plants open in early May, the activity will increase substantially,” said Clarke, in a press release.

“Please keep workers’ safety in mind when driving through construction areas. We will be doing our best to inform residents in advance where the roadwork is occurring.”

Motorists are advised to proceed slowly and with caution throughout construction zones and to use alternative routes when possible.

Both motorists and pedestrians are also advised to obey all posted traffic signs throughout the CBRM, as any motorist or pedestrian who fails to obey a traffic sign, particularly regarding detours, street barricades or reduced speed limits in a work zone, is subject to a summary offence ticket under the Nova Scotia Motor Vehicle Act.

Residents are encouraged to check the CBRM’s website and follow the municipality’s social media accounts on Facebook and Twitter for information on roadwork.
