All the votes are in and the Glace Bay Miners appear to be the 2017 winners of the Chevrolet Good Deeds Cup.

The local peewee ‘A’ hockey team had the most votes in the online contest that recognizes good deeds on and off the ice when voting closed early Friday morning.

However, nothing is official until Chevrolet, the contest sponsor, makes an official announcement at 8 a.m. Saturday morning.

“We did finish first at the end of the contest so we are hoping that we did win,” said Kenzie Wadden, head coach of the hockey team.

“They have to review some of the votes but last night we did finish in first place.”

Teams across the country were asked to submit a video of a good deed they performed in their community, and the public was able to vote on the winner.

At last look, Glace Bay was ahead of the Alberton Regals of Alberton, P.E.I. by some 8,000 votes.

The Miners good deed submission followed their visit to residents at Taigh Na Mara nursing home in Glace Bay where they handed out cupcakes, gave out plants as Valentine’s Day gifts, and went room-to-room visiting seniors.

The overall winning team will receive the grand prize of $10,000, as well as $15,000 for a charity of their choice.

The Miners have chosen the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia as its charity.

Another $5,000 will be donated to both their minor hockey association and their provincial branch as well.

Originally, the contest winner was set to be named on April 9. However, the national contest was halted in late March due to an online voting issue.

The Miners were leading before votes for two other teams suddenly took off.

After that, Chevrolet Canada announced online voting had been “compromised” and was restarted.
